We’re talking overpriced, underwhelming, or just straight-up “why did I waste a reservation on this?” bad. So today, we’re breaking down three Disneyland restaurants the experts, straight-up refuse to book… and a few we’d book again and again. Galactic Grill Galactic Grill in Tomorrowland should be fun. Space-themed burgers? Star Wars-adjacent vibes? Sounds promising. But let’s just say there are other quick service spots around the park that will give you a tastier and more unique experience. It’s just not the greatest. The pasta is forgettable, the entrees are a tad basic, and nothing on the menu really feels worthy of the price tag. Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar – Yes, it’s popular for a reason. The drinks are strong, the snacks are underrated, and the theming? Next-level fun. Disney World just added a NEW attraction to Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and while we love the choice of more attractions, is this a Lightning Lane you should book? Hollywood Studios There are certain attractions we’ll book every time we can (we’re looking at you, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure), but there are some that we might go back and forth on if it’s the right selection for the group. Let’s take a look at this new attraction to see if it’s worth it! You can now choose The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure as a Lightning Lane selection at Hollywood Studios. This new show debuts on May 27th and is a reimagined version of the Voyage of the Little Mermaid, which did not reopen after the 2020 closures. ©Disney Generally speaking, you don’t typically need Lightning Lanes for traditional stage shows at Disney World. Shows like Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage, For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration, and Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond typically don’t need prior reservations because the theaters are large and they have consistent showings throughout the day. If it’s full when you arrive, you should be able to hop into the next show with little to no issues. Beauty and the Beast at Hollywood Studios There are a few other shows that you might want to consider choosing in Lightning Lane. This can be shows like Festival of the Lion King and Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular since these shows are very popular and can fill up quickly on busy days. Where does The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure fall in this? ©Disney While it might be very busy in the beginning, we aren’t expecting this show to consistently be busy. The show also has showtimes from 9:15 AM to 7:15 PM, which goes much later than other shows. Festival of the Lion King has their last showing at 4 PM, and Indiana Jones ends at 4:30 PM. Festival of the Lion King We don’t think The Little Mermaid is going to be our go-to Lightning Lane, especially when there are other attractions like Smugglers Run, Slinky Dog Dash, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway available. But does this mean you should never book it? Nope! Slinky Dog Dash Within your group, some might want to tackle bigger rides like Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and others might want a calmer experience. When the big kids are heading to the coasters, the rest of the family might love watching The Little Mermaid in an air-conditioned theater with seats. The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure When you book a Lightning Lane, they give you a time range of when to return to your attraction. For those who like a little bit more structure in their park days, booking Lightning Lanes can help keep everyone on schedule. Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park is in a state of transition, during which some spaces that have gone LONG unused are finally being dragged into the park’s future! Welcome to Hollywood Studios! Some of these buildings date back to the park’s original Disney-MGM Studios days, meaning that they are nearly 40 years old at this point. Voyage of the Little Mermaid A Little Mermaid show has been a staple of Hollywood Studios since 1992. Voyage of The Little Mermaid debuted on January 7th of that year in the park’s Animation Courtyard, and featured an abridged version of the film’s story that utilized a mix of live actors, puppets, special effects and laser projections on the auditorium walls and ceilings to mimic being underwater. This original version of the show ran until 2020, closing along with the rest of Walt Disney World at the onset of the COVID pandemic and never reopening. In December of 2023, Disney confirmed that a new version of the show entitled The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure would replace the original in the same theater. The original Voyage of the Little Mermaid According to Disney, The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure will keep “the lively puppets, props, and scenery center stage. But new to this production, get ready to be dazzled with new digital puppetry and jaw-dropping effects.” Disney also confirmed that “cutting-edge digital imagery motion capture” would be used to recreate several characters, including King Triton and Ursula. ©Disney Studio 1 Company Store A remnant of the once-planned Muppet Land that was meant to surround Muppet*Vision 3D, the Studio 1 store was once the home base for Muppet merchandise in the park. Like the original Little Mermaid show, the Studio 1 store never fully reopened following the pandemic (though it has been used for some rare special events). Sunset Showcase Star Wars Launch Bay Yes, this one is a cheat as Star Wars Launch Bay is still open, though you might not be able to tell most days. To add insult to injury, the walkthrough attraction takes up the space previously used by the Magic of Disney Animation Tour. As much as we love Star Wars, there absolutely has to be something better to do with this space. Launch Bay As Hollywood Studios continues to evolve, more and more of the park’s original infrastructure will likely either be completely retrofitted or demolished to make way for future attractions. Stitch is causing chaos for his new movie, coming out May 23rd, and he just landed at the airport! ©Disney The Orlando International Airport (MCO) has been attacked by this blue alien, and he’s even conquering TSA. Check out these new Lilo & Stitch luggage bins at MCO! These bins have Stitch on them with all of his pool toys and say, “Don’t Leave Luggage Unattended.” Stitch! It was such a delight to see our favorite alien at the airport. Sometimes security can feel stressful, but it was such a nice surprise to see how happy Stitch was on it. We love it! While we’ve been obsessed with Stitch since 2002, we’re thrilled to see Lilo and her bestie on the big screen again. Something very interesting has happened in the world of media, and we’ve been keeping a close eye on it for the past few weeks. ©Sesame Street Late last year, there was a question of whether Sesame Street would be bought by Disney, but now we know that’s not the case. Instead, it’s just been announced that Sesame Street will soon be available on Netflix. Then, Sesame Street posted the following announcement on their own social media, sharing the following statement in their caption: “We are excited to announce that all new @sesamestreet episodes are coming to Netflix worldwide along with library episodes, and new episodes will also release the same day on PBS Stations and @pbskids platforms in the US, preserving a 50+ year relationship. The support of @netflix, @pbs, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting serve as a unique public-private partnership to enable Sesame Street to continue to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.“ ©Sesame Street This means that while Netflix subscribers will be able to access the episodes, they’ll also be available on the PBS stations and platforms completely for free, so those who don’t have Netflix will be able to continue to enjoy new and old episodes as well. ©Sesame Street Looking for more recent media news? When you’re going to Disney World, it’s extremely important to make sure you have the right shoes. Make sure you wear the right shoes! You’re going to be walking thousands upon thousands of steps each day, and if you’ve worn the wrong shoes, your feet will kill you after day one, and instead of having fun, you’ll be busy thinking about how much pain you’re in for the rest of your trip. One of the most highly recommended shoes for the parks, or for physical activity in general, is HOKAs. We tried out two of the most popular styles and put them head to head, and let’s just say — one EASILY came out on top! HOKA Rincon 4 Womens Shoes HOKA Rincon 4 Womens Shoes The first shoes we tried were the HOKA Rincon 4 Womens Shoes. While these were comfortable, we had an issue with the back heel riding up on our ankle and it gave us a blister after the first day of wear. They were comfy and so squishy it was like stepping on a cloud, but we MUCH preferred the second pair we tried! Check them out! Hoka Women’s Clifton 10 Sneaker Hoka Women’s Clifton 10 Sneakers The second pair we tried were the Hoka Women’s Clifton 10 Sneakers and these were much more comfortable on our feet. Our reporter has a high arch, which is where her problem with wearing tennis shoes stems from to begin with. The squishiness of the bottom of these as well as the soles is much more present in these than the Rincons, which we appreciated. They also fit our feet better and we didn’t feel like we were using the outside bones of our feet to walk on — we were able to flatten our foot completely in the shoe and still have a springy step! Actors, musicians, politicians, athletes, and every kind of notable figure in between have been making pilgrimages since Disneyland first opened in 1955. Let’s go to Disney World! Learning that celebs have worked at a Disney theme park is nothing new either, as many future notable figures have gotten their start at Disney’s parks over the last 70 years. However, it’s not often we see a well-established celebrity figure working at one of the company’s theme parks… even in a temporary and honorary capacity. Last month, Wheel of Fortune host Ryan Seacrest — who has been an icon in the entertainment industry for over two decades — had a run as an honorary Cast Member at the Magic Kingdom. Seacrest posted a series of photos and a video to his Instagram account, along with the caption, “Earning my ears as an honorary Disney cast member and earning some flight miles with these balloons.” Some of the photos included Ryan doing his best UP impression with co-star Vanna White… @ryanseacrest Instagram … as well as pointing out his very own Cast Member name tag. Ready or not, here Stitch comes! And in typical fashion, he’s created mayhem…at the Disneyland Resort! As debuted on Good Morning America today, everyone’s favorite mischievous alien crash-landed at Disneyland Park to experience the 70th Celebration firsthand. From snapping a few photos with Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse in their new looks created just for the 70th Celebration to splashing down on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, he wasted no time in experiencing some of the many highlights a day at Disneyland can offer. And of course, what day would be complete without a shopping spree at the Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A.? Stitch made sure to leave with some of the new merchandise items as part of the Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration Collection. When we say we’re nerds for Disney here at Disney Food Blog, we mean it. In fact, we’re so nerdy for Disney that we keep track of prices of all Disney World food so we can see increases (and decreases, but hey, that isn’t too common). EPCOT We are sorry to report that two EPCOT spots have been hit with the “price increase bug,” so your next meal might be a bit more expensive. First up is one of our favorite secret snack spots in EPCOT: the Popcorn Stand in the Canada Pavilion. Popcorn in a souvenir bucket is now $14.25! Canada Popcorn Cart Previously, it was $13, so that’s a $1.25 increase, which is kind of a lot for popcorn. Don’t worry, though — the Maple Popcorn, our one true love, is still $7. Maple Popcorn San Angel Inn in the Mexico Pavilion was also hit with that price increase bug and it hit a good chunk of the menu. Yikes! Sopa Azteca changed from $12 to $13 Guacamole changed from $15 to $16 Totopos changed from $9 to $10 Pollo a Las Rajas changed from $32 to $33 Tacos changed from $34 to $35 Camarones a la Diabla changed from $32 to $33 Ensalada Cesar changed from $18 to $20 Enchiladas de Pollo changed from $31 to $32 Baja Tacos de Pescado changed from $32 to $33 Pescado A La Veracruzana changed from $38 to $39 Brownie Sundae changed from $10 to $12 San Angel Inn Besides the Brownie Sundae, all of the items listed increased by a dollar. It’s the end of an era at Disney World. The phased closure of the Grand Avenue area — home of The Muppets — has begun. Muppets Courtyard in Hollywood Studios Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano closed its doors on May 10th, and on June 7th, both Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo will permanently close as well, marking the final days of the Muppets Courtyard. While we’re dreading seeing those pesky Disney construction walls again, we are excited about bringing Monsters, Inc. to this area. But, one very lucky group will get to be the last ones to experience the area and what it still has to offer! Heads up, Hollywood Studios Cast Members! Disney has revealed that Cast Members who work at Hollywood Studios will be invited to a Cast Member party on June 10th — a few days after Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo officially close to the public. We love The Muppets! Cast Members will be the last ones to experience the Grand Avenue and Muppets Courtyard area along with Muppet*Vision 3D itself. We can’t say we’re not jealous, but we know these Cast Members deserve it (and so much more!). As of now, Disney has shared that this event is only for Hollywood Studios Cast Members, but we’ll let you know if that changes in the future. Kermit in Muppet*Vision The new Monsters, Inc. themed land will pick up after the events of the popular Pixar film, and humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. Disney shares that here, “you’ll be able to stroll the streets alongside some of your favorite monsters” and even visit the Laugh Factory! ©Disney Not only that, but the new Monsters, Inc. land will feature Disney’s VERY FIRST suspended coaster, which “will put you right in the middle of the monster action. Just be sure to fill out your paperwork! Roz is always watching…” In addition to this brand-new coaster, Disney also announced that Monsters, Inc. land will have a new theater show as well. ©Disney We’ll be on the lookout for additional updates about the new Monsters, Inc. While the Magic Kingdom is chock-full of delicious snacks and treats, one of our favorite Disney World treats is available just down the Monorail Loop at the Grand Floridian! Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa The snack in question is available at the resort’s Gasparilla Island Grill. While the restaurant offers a variety of entrees for lunch and dinner, including artisan burgers, flatbreads and sandwiches, our focus today is on something of a much sweeter variety. The Mickey Chocolate Choux, which is available for a $6.79, is a chocolate Pâte à Choux filled with chocolate chantilly cream in the shape Mickey Mouse… Yum AND Look at them! WE Mickey Chocolate Choux LOVE IT! Mickey Chocolate Choux We found the offering to be full of milk chocolate flavor without being too overpowering or rich. The choux itself was quite fluffy, but with a crunchiness that reminded us of the crisp edges one would find along the sides of a fresh pan of brownies. Frankly, our only complaint about it was that it wasn’t bigger! So much filling goodness! Over in Epic Universe, you’ve got dozens of new food stalls, restaurants, bars, and everything in between to check out. We’re making it our mission to try them all and help you decide what’s worth it for your first trip to Epic Universe! Dark Universe In Dark Universe, near the Burning Blade Tavern, you’ll find DeLacey’s Cottage. This is a quick service spot with a limited menu, and we figured it was finally time to try one of the more savory items we’ve had our eyes on. However, this snack might be a little different from what we were expecting. The Frank & Friends Pretzel is $12.99 and comes with a small cup of “white cheese sauce.” This thing is cute, looking like Frankenstein’s monster, but that might be our favorite part of this pretzel. Frank & Friends Pretzel It’s not our favorite soft pretzel we’ve ever had at a theme park. It doesn’t have that chewy exterior that you want from a soft pretzel, and while there’s some salt on it, we think it could have benefited from a little bit more. The cheese sauce tastes like it’s flavored with processed white American cheese, which we think is the best-executed part of the snack. If you’ve been following Disney Food Blog for a while, you know we LOVE our plastic cheese, especially with pretzels, and this one did not disappoint. The cheese sauce There are so many better snacks in Epic Universe that are CHEAPER or the exact same price as this one that won’t leave you disappointed. If you were really craving a pretzel, you might want to pick one up at Auntie Anne’s at Universal’s CityWalk. No, it won’t be as cute, but it will be a well-executed pretzel. Universal CityWalk This means (and we never thought we’d say this) that a Mickey Pretzel wins against this by a MILE. Mickey pretzels are far from the best ones out there, but they usually don’t let us down, especially if we’re just craving the classic snack. Not to mention it’s only $7.99 versus the $12.99, so it’s a much better bang for your buck. Mickey Pretzel While you’re in Dark Universe and are looking for a snack to try, we love the Burning Cheddar Bites at Burning Blade Tavern. These have a lovely texture with a bit of heat. We hope you brought an EPIC appetite to this review! Mead Hall inside Isle of Berk at Epic Universe We’re BACK at Mead Hall inside the Isle of Berk at Epic Universe to see what they’re cookin’ up on the kids menu, and now we’re bringing you our FULL review. Is it worth a stop on your next trip to this BRAND-NEW theme park?! Find out here! Atmosphere Mead Hall is the Isle of Berk’s “main gathering place, a grand chamber where Vikings feast on meat, fish, sandwiches, and more.” If you’ve got a big appetite, this is definitely the place for you! Mead Hall Wood carvings on the sides of the dining room are covered in dragons, and there are tapestries hanging from the walls that tell more stories of the How to Train Your Dragon characters. The chandelier that hangs high above looks like it has real candles. Tapestries The restaurant is dark and filled with air conditioning, making it a great place to hang out and rest before exploring the rest of the park. This restaurant continues to bring in the ancient vibes of the land, and you’ll feel like you entered How to Train Your Dragon and became a citizen of Berk. Where the Chief sits! But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?! Menu Mead Hall serves hearty meals like turkey wings, sausage links, and meatballs. There are a few other options like a harvest salad and a vegan burger, for other Vikings as well. Mead Hall Menu There’s a kids menu (or Little Dragon Riders as they call it in Berk) with mac and cheese, bugers, and chicken pops. This is what we’re checking out on this visit! There are plenty of desserts, beer, wine, and of course, mead as well. Menu And now, onto the main event — the food! Eats Mead Hall has two different kids’ meal options — the Nightlight Burger, and Barf and Belch’s Duo Plate, which we picked up for $9.49. This meal comes with mac & cheese bites, grilled sausage, carrots, Nordic fries, and grapes on the vine. That sounds like a LOT of food! Oh, and it comes in a cute little Viking ship! How cute?! We were almost expecting the grilled sausage to be more of a hot dog, but it wasn’t! It was more seasoned and smokier than a hot dog and was grilled well, then sliced into chunks. They weren’t quite bite-sized, so parents of younger kiddos may want to keep that in mind. We loved the addition of some red grapes, which were nice and fresh, but ultimately just grapes. We also really enjoyed the carrots, which were not raw baby carrots like we were expecting. Instead, they were whole, very small roasted carrots with excellent flavor — a bit of salt but not much else. Roasted carrots The Nordic fries are not quite steak fries, but they were thicker than a crinkle cut fry or a fast food French fry you might be used to around theme parks. These weren’t anything to write home about, but we’ve literally never met a potato we didn’t like, which means these get high marks in our book. Nordic fries What didn’t quite get high marks in this kids’ meal were the mac and cheese bites. We really wanted to love these as they’re a fun element to add to a kids’ meal, but these were gross. Granted, we almost forgot they were mac and cheese bites and thought they were chicken nuggets at first, but even after realizing our mistake, we still didn’t love these. They had no cheese flavor whatsoever, and no pasta texture whatsoever. Mac and cheese bites, apparently However, the positive thing is that there are a lot of choices in this kid’s meal. So if one thing is gross, you’re still fine. Portion size-wise, this was a great portion. It was $9.49 but didn’t come with a drink, which we still think is pretty fair compared to some of the other pricing around Epic Universe! Nosh or Not This Epic Universe restaurant is a must-visit if… You’re a fan of the How to Train Your Dragon Universe and theming. You have a HUGE appetite after being in the park all day. You’re looking for something quick and delicious. You should skip this Epic Universe spot if… You’re looking for a more elevated, formal meal with table service. You don’t plan on spending time on the Isle of Berk. Your kiddos are more the “chicken tendies and fries” type (we get it!). Overall Mead Hall impressed us yet again — and we’re hoping we maybe just got a bad batch of those mac and cheese bites, because the rest of this kids’ meal was SO good. Not only that, but it was extremely filling — good enough for an adult or even two younger kiddos to split.
