Menu alert! If there’s one thing we LOVE, it’s trying all the new (and returning) menu additions around Disney World. Whether Disney is trying something new — like an OCTOPUS Cocktail — or bringing back an old menu item, there’s never a dull moment in the world of Disney dining. California Grill In fact, Disney just announced a special anniversary, and in honor of the occasion, California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort is making some fun menu changes. Let’s see what’s cookin’! Happy birthday, California Grill! This beloved Disney restaurant is celebrating its 30th anniversary at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Here’s a fun fact for ya — California Grill was Disney World’s first signature dining experience. What a legacy! The California Grill is truly a masterpiece of fine dining; it has even been recognized by the Michelin Guide. California Grill dining room Of course, the restaurant has gone through quite a few changes since it opened 30 years ago, but the one thing that has remained consistent? The hard work and dedication displayed by Disney Cast Members every day! In fact, one of the restaurant’s opening day Cast Members, Ray, said, “That opening team was really special, everyone brought a different talent and was constantly learning for each other.” ©Disney Ray even created one of California Grill’s most popular cocktails, the Monterey, or as his regulars call it, the “Ray Ray.” Want to try it? You’re in luck! Disney just confirmed that this signature cocktail will be returning as part of a NEW limited-time anniversary menu. The Monterey is BACK, people! If you’re wondering what’s in it, Ray explained, “The Monterey was made with [flavors of vanilla, pineapple] and lemonade made from scratch.” The menu is CHANGING! Wanna know what else will be on the special new menu? According to a Cast Member, several returning items will be on the menu from now through May 2026. Look for selections marked with a ’30’ on the menu. So far, we know that the following items will be returning: Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli Grilled Pork Tenderloin Blueberry-Goat Cheese Cheesecake The Monterey (Ray’s signature cocktail) Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli Disney teased that other returning favorites will also be added to the menu, so if you’re an original California Grill fan, make sure to stop by through May 2026! Grilled Pork Tenderloin We’ve tried a LOT of food in Disney World, and California Grill consistently delivers on flavor, quality, and overall experience. You can even catch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from an exclusive viewing location at the TOP of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. EPCOT may be known for world-class festivals and iconic rides, but if you’re not here for the food…what are you even doing? L’Artisan Des Glaces We recently took on the very serious (and very delicious) task of revisiting six often overlooked EPCOT snacks, and let’s just say — we were not disappointed. From savory to sweet, creamy to crunchy, we covered a LOT of flavor territory, and there’s something on this list for just about every kind of snacker. Ready to see which ones made the cut? Let’s get into it. Café Liégeois – $7.50 (Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie – France Pavilion) First up, the Café Liégeois. This one feels like what would happen if your favorite mousse and your fanciest coffee met up for dessert. It’s layered with a super-light coffee mousse, fluffy whipped cream, and little chocolate cake crumbles underneath. Café Liégeois We liked it, but we really wanted more of that cake in the middle to ground the whole thing. As it stands, it’s heavy on the mousse and cream, light on the cake — so if texture is a thing for you, just keep that in mind. Still, the flavor is smooth and not overly bitter. The crispy pearls on top? A+ crunch. This is the kind of snack you grab when you want to feel like you’re treating yourself but don’t want something super heavy. Tarte au Citron – $7.25 (Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie – France Pavilion) Then we got hit in the tastebuds by the Tarte au Citron. This thing does not play around. It’s bold, tart, citrus-forward, and refreshingly zippy — like, almost lemonade-level tart. If you love lemon (or even sour candy), you’re going to vibe with this. Tarte au Citron The meringue on top brings in just enough sweetness to balance it, and the crust threw us for a loop in the best way. We expected a classic crunchy tart shell, but what we got was a soft, almost cookie-like base. It worked. This is one of those snacks you remember for being different, and we’re all about that. Pretzel Nuggets with Beer Cheese – $8.50 (Block & Hans – American Adventure Pavilion) Okay, we know EPCOT has pretzels everywhere, but these pretzel nuggets with beer cheese at Block & Hans are on another level. Think soft, buttery pretzel bites tossed in garlic butter and a smoky BBQ rub — they’re already good on their own. But then you dunk them into the house-made beer cheese, and it’s game over. That cheese sauce, though The dip is warm, creamy, and has just enough kick to keep things interesting. Our only complaint? You don’t get much cheese. Like, you’ll probably need more. But honestly, that’s just more reason to go back and grab another round. These are easily one of the best salty snacks in the park right now. Chermoula Chicken Kebab – $6.25 (Tangierine Café – Morocco Pavilion) This was the surprise hit of the day. The Chermoula Chicken Kebab from Tangierine Café isn’t trying too hard — it’s just good food, plain and simple. The chicken is grilled and seasoned with warm spices that bring just the tiniest bit of heat (nothing crazy, we promise). Chermoula Chicken Kebab The garlic aïoli on top takes it up a notch, and the carrot-chickpea salad on the side has a few raisins that sneak in a little sweetness. It’s one of those snacks that’s flavorful, filling enough to keep you going, and super easy to eat on the go. If you’re not in the mood for sugar but still want something that feels like a full snack moment, this is a solid pick. Black Garlic, Truffle, and Parmesan Fries – $6.49 (Connections Eatery) Let’s talk fries. Specifically, the Black Garlic, Truffle, and Parmesan Fries from Connections Eatery. These might sound a little fancy for theme park food, but don’t let that stop you — they’re so good. The black garlic-truffle aïoli is rich and earthy without being too heavy, and the parmesan on top adds the perfect amount of sharpness. These look GOOD The fries themselves? Crispy, hot, and basically begging to be devoured. These aren’t your basic fries with a side of ketchup — they feel upgraded, but still super snackable. If you’re not afraid of bold flavors, put this on your must-try list. Churro Sundae – $7.99 (La Cantina de San Angel – Mexico Pavilion) The Churro Sundae is part soft-serve float, part churro treat, part sugar bomb. It’s built with mango Dole Whip, lime Dole Whip, whipped cream, sprinkles, and churro bites poking out of the top like crunchy little flags. Flavor-wise, we actually liked it a lot — the lime and mango combo is fruity and refreshing, especially on a hot Florida day. Churro sundae But the churros? They were doing their best, but they were pretty tough (as Disney churros often are, especially when stuck in cold treats). Still, the overall vibe is fun, and the Dole Whip layers are totally worth the mess. Just eat fast before the Florida sun turns it into a puddle. Final Thoughts EPCOT is kind of snack heaven if you know where to look — and honestly, these six picks prove that. Whether you’re chasing something sweet and citrusy, looking for warm pretzels to dip in cheese, or in need of fries with a fancy twist, EPCOT has you covered. Some of these snacks are low-key classics, others feel like hidden gems, but they’re all worth a stop next time you’re eating your way around the World Showcase. WE KNOW – there are SO many great snacks at Disney World! How do you choose (we don’t want to choose, but will blow our budget on Day 1 otherwise)? We’ve got you covered! We have reviewed nearly EVERY snack available at Disney World, and we’ve written a series of DFB Guides about them! A BIG change just hit Universal Orlando Resort, and it could impact your next vacation! Universal has made changes to its designated smoking areas, and we have all the details for you. Universal Studios Effective today, May 15th, 2025, Universal Orlando has made changes to the designated smoking areas at its parks. While previously, there were locations inside each of the parks that guests could smoke, going forward, there will only be smoking areas located outside of the park entrance (except for Volcano Bay, which is keeping its in-park smoking area for now). Epic Universe will have its smoking area near the restrooms at the park exit. Universal Studios’ designated smoking area will be outside the park exit near the Studio archway. Islands of Adventure will have its designated smoking area outside the park exit opposite the lighthouse. You will find Universal CityWalk’s smoking area to the left of the Red Coconut Club. There will no longer be designated smoking areas inside these parks, so make sure to plan accordingly if you or someone in your group needs to stop for smoke breaks. Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure Universal’s water park, Volcano Bay, will be the only park to keep its designated smoking area inside the park. However, once TapuTapu is no longer in use, the smoking area will also be moved to outside the park entrance. TapuTapu is the wearable band that facilitates joining the virtual lines, contactless payments, and interactive experiences. So, while you will still be able to smoke at the Wave Village (East) for now, the smoking area will also be moved to outside the park entrance eventually. TapuTapu will no longer be used beginning October 1st, so we will likely see the smoking area move around that time. ©Universal Orlando Disney World already made this change to its smoking policies in May 2019, when it moved all designated smoking areas to locations outside the park’s entrance. The policy is still in effect, and guests must exit the park to find designated smoking areas. Magic Kingdom Stay tuned to DFB for all your Universal Orlando news! We’ve been obsessing over every detail for the Disneyland 70th Anniversary Celebration, and it’s finally here! Paint the Night Parade Disneyland is bringing back the Paint the Night parade, and while we’re screaming from excitement, we got a sneak peek at the parade that we’re so happy to share with you. Paint the Night is back as of May 16th to kick off Disneyland’s 70th anniversary, which will run until the end of summer 2026. Sorcerer Mickey float This parade has over one million lights spread out through the parade floats, characters, and dancers, and truly lights up the park. Currently, the parade is set to have start times of 8:45 and 10:45 PM, but make sure you’re checking the Disneyland app for the most up-to-date information. This parade is SO GOOD! With this parade coming back, Disney has updated costumes and floats to make this parade even more spectacular! Little Mermaid float The parade has also brought back the Frozen float, which hasn’t been seen since 2018, when it was replaced with The Incredibles float. Frozen float If you’re looking for an exclusive parade viewing opportunity, you can purchase a Paint the Night Dining Package at Plaza Inn. This package includes reserved viewing and a meal that you can pick up from 1 to 4 p.m. Plaza Inn Wondering why we keep on saying Paint the Night is back and not new? That’s because it started in 2015 to celebrate the 60th Anniversary Diamond Celebration at Disneyland. It was the successor of the very well-loved The Main Street Electrical Parade (and the song for the new Paint the Night will be a nod to this prior parade!). Paint the Night ran consistently until 2016 and then became a seasonal offering or had limited-time showings. Goofy and Donald We cannot express how happy we are that this parade is coming back and ready to roll down Main Street. It’s a perfect way to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the park that started it all. Cars float Keep following Disney Food Blog for more Disney news and updates. Get ready, because it’s time for the Disneyland 70th Anniversary Celebration! Disneyland Entrance and Train Station As part of the festivities, there will be new ride additions, brand-new attractions, the return of fan-favorite parades, and so much more — like a whole lot of exciting entertainment. We’re talking fireworks, parades, shows, and a whole lot more. As part of the Disneyland 70th Anniversary Celebration, you can set out on a quest to discover special moments with MagicBand+ at five locations around Disneyland Park! We tested them out, so you know how they will react to MagicBand+ when you visit the park during this festive celebration — which runs from May 16th, 2025, throughout summer 2026! Grab your MagicBand+ and let’s go! Tilly’s Booth at Main Street Cinema Over at the Main Street Cinema, you can head to Tilly’s Booth to tap your MagicBand+ for a special surprise! Tilly’s Booth at Main Street Cinema Once you tap your band, you will be issued your very own ticket for “Celebrating 70 Magical Year at Disneyland.” We are starting off our ticket collection strong! Our ticket said, “Valued Magic Key Holder” and a Cast Member mentioned that there are also options for Club 33 and DVC to be printed, but we don’t know what a regular ticket would say if you were a Magic Key Holder, Club 33 member, or DVC member. Tilly’s Booth at Main Street Cinema On the back, it says, “Admit One” and “A New Verse, A Tribute to the Sherman Brothers.” We had a great time visiting Tilly, but it is time to make our way to the next stop! Tilly’s Booth at Main Street Cinema Frontierland Booth at Silver Spur Supplies Next up, we stopped by the Frontierland Booth at Silber Spur Supplies. This MagicBand+ activation has THREE touchpoints, and of course, we are checking out them all. Frontierland Booth at Silver Spur Supplies The first touchpoint printed us off a ticket for Mark Twain’s Riverboat. Mark Twain’s Riverboat The next one printed off a ticket for the Disneyland Railroad. Disneyland Railroad And the final one, printed off a ticket for the Golden Horseshoe Revue. Each time you get a ticket, a fun little audio clip also plays, so make sure to keep your ears open! Golden Horseshoe Revue Our collection of tickets is growing! Time to head over to our next stop. Skipper Lockers at Jungle Cruise in Adventureland We made our way over to the Skipper Lockers at Jungle Cruise to find the next MagicBand+ activation. Skipper Lockers at Jungle Cruise Tap your MagicBand+ on the touchpoint and you will receive a little ticket for your riverboat cruise. Riverboat Cruise Ticket Each ticket tells you which boat you will be traveling aboard and even includes which crew you will be a part of. Each crew has a meaning, so don’t forget to ask a Skipper what your crew means once you get your ticket! You will also find your crew on one of the lockers. Riverboat Cruise Ticket Now that we have grabbed our riverboat cruise ticket, let’s head over to our next stop! Fantasyland Window by Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique The Fantasyland Window activation has five different touchpoints that opens up shields in the display to show diorama scenes of different characters and attractions in Fantasyland. There is a diorama that shows Snow White and the Evil Queen, Mad Hatter and Dormouse, Peter Pan, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and the King Arthur Carrousel. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride Unlike the first three activations, you don’t receive any sort of ticket with these interactions. Tapping your MagicBand+ just opens up one of the dioramas and you get to watch a short display. They are still a lot of fun though, and it is pretty cool to tap your MagicBand+ to start a little show. Evil Queen There is one last location for MagicBand+ activations, however, it wasn’t available when we stopped by. But we still want to tell you a bit about it! Autopia in Tomorrowland Unfortunately, the Autotopia interaction was not installed yet, so we were unable to experience this one. Cast Members in the area did not know exactly where it would be installed, but this is an additional interaction to look forward to at some point in the future! It will likely be somewhere by Autopia based on the name from Disney, but we will keep you updated as we learn more. Autopia in Disneyland With MagicBand+, you can also enjoy special interactions and surprises at the following nighttime experiences during the Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration: World of Color Happiness! Wondrous Journeys Paint the Night ©Disney We can’t wait to experience more of this special event. In the meantime, stay tuned to DFB for the latest Disney news and more! Finding the perfect strategy to maximize your early entry time inside the Disney World parks can be a tedious task, but it’s not impossible! Early Entry With as often as we’re in Disney World’s parks and hotels, you can bet we’ve all had different opinions on what might work best for how we’re looking to get the best return on our extra time early in the morning inside Disney World’s parks. We’ve tested all kinds of ideas to help deliver the best tips and tricks to help you on your next visit, and these are the ones that work every time. You’ve spent a lot of time, money, and effort over weeks, months, and even years of planning your next Disney World vacation, and you’re not looking to let it all go to waste. Deciding to stay at one of Disney World’s hotels that allows for early park entry in the morning before the rest of the day’s visitors walk in may have been one of the very perks that help solidify your hotel decision. We were held up for a bit If getting into any of Disney World’s parks 30 minutes early to make the best use of your time with this perk sounds like your way of getting your day started, we’ve gathered a few of our best early entry strategies that have worked the best! It’s All About Transportation If you’re looking to visit EPCOT for early entry, starting your day off at the International Gateway’s park entrance could feel like an illegal move — especially if your hotel isn’t one that’s within walking distance to it. Inside the Disney Skyliner But, taking the skyliner, a series of buses, or opting for a ride share service that would put you at the back entrance of EPCOT could set you up for success. By skipping right over to Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure early in France, you could easily be avoiding one of the longest lines you would have experienced. Late Breakfast Or Brunch Is Hack Not someone who’s ready to eat breakfast as soon as your feet hit the ground in the morning? We can make that work in your favor. Ale & Compass Breakfast Buffet Consider booking your breakfast later in the morning, around 10AM or so. This way, you’re able to take full advantage of the early entry, round out your morning with a few more things around the park’s rope drop, and have worked up an appetite to enjoy a nice break for your family as the lines start to stack up. Midday Naps Wait — did we really just suggest a nap? Yep, we sure did! For optimum wait times, your best bet is to use this perk you’re already paying for and get a rested early start to your day. That view! By accomplishing a few of your “must-dos” early on, this leaves you time to head back to your hotel for a nap, a quick swim, and even a lengthier lunch or dinner before finishing out your day in the park later in the evening. Here’s a bonus tip: during the Summer, early morning and late evening are the best times to be outside in Florida to beat the heat and deal with the least amount of crowds. We’re always sharing our best tips, tricks, and proven strategies to help you win your next Disney trip! Thirty years ago, California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort opened as Walt Disney World’s first signature dining experience, forever changing the landscape of Disney dining. Located on the 15th floor overlooking Magic Kingdom and Seven Seas Lagoon, this iconic restaurant quickly became popular for its fresh, seasonal menus, royal views of Cinderella Castle and one of the first open kitchens at the Resort. But beyond the contemporary cuisine, what truly makes California Grill special is the people. Crafting a Legacy from Day One to Today Leading up to opening night, a team was assembled with one key ingredient in mind – passion. “That opening team was really special, everyone brought a different talent and was constantly learning for each other,” Ray, an opening-day cast member, remembers. It’s that same passion that inspired Ray to craft one of California Grill’s most popular cocktails, the Monterey, or as his regulars call it the “Ray Ray”, which will be returning to this year’s limited-time anniversary menu. “We’re surrounded by the freshest ingredients,” Ray explains. “The Monterey was made with crushed blackberries and lemonade made from scratch. Since the beginning, California Grill has focused on excellence and that still comes through today with local and domestic sourced seasonal ingredients.” World Class Service Through the Years For opening-day server, Dale, his passion goes hand-in-hand with purpose. “We’re a part of the Disney culture and the world-class service we provide is something you don’t receive anywhere else,” Dale says. And it’s because of that spirit of service that Dale and other long-time Cast Members have created lifelong connections with guests. Over the decades, the California Grill team has welcomed families who first visited with their toddlers and now return with grandchildren alongside them. “Something special about Disney is that people come back and vacation year after year and I’ve gotten to see families grow up in front of my eyes,” says Walter, another opening-day server. “I’ve seen kids when they were seven or eight years old and now, they’re 35 visiting with children of their own! I think that’s the real kicker, this place has been here 30 years, and it’s given us an opportunity to build strong, amazing relationships with a lot of families.” That sense of connection, decades deep and deeply personal, is what continues to define California Grill. For many cast members, the memories they’ve shared with guests are cherished moments of their own. “Once, I waited on Roy E. Disney, Walt’s nephew. And after the fireworks I went over to the table, and he was crying a little bit, and he said, ‘I’ll tell you, Dale, I’ve seen these a ton of times, and it still gets me’…and that’s my favorite memory of 30 years.” Dale fondly recalls. Celebrating California Grill Since 1995 California Grill celebrates a legacy of excellence and care carried on by the passion of its cast members. Since 1995, they have set the stage for a new generation of signature dining at Walt Disney World; blending bold flavors and techniques into beautiful experience. With each new dish and every returning guest, its story continues to be written by the people who have made this restaurant special since that very first night. If you’re heading to Orlando’s NEWEST theme park soon — Epic Universe, you’ll want to make sure you budget for this item. Epic Universe We already had the opportunity to visit Epic Universe a few times, and it’s safe to say we’re blown away. If you are planning a trip, there is more than just the tickets you’ll purchase. Of course, you’ll want to plan to grab some of those delicious snack items like the Butterbeer Crepe. But, there’s one purchase you probably aren’t planning for, but you should! We know that Universal provides lockers at attractions to hold your bag and belongings, but did you know there are also all-day lockers that you can purchase at the front of the park? That’s right. There are two sizes to choose from: family-size lockers measuring 11” x 17.75” x 17.7” and large lockers measuring 11” x 11.75” x 17.7” are available to rent near the park entrance. The family size locker is $20 while the large locker is $15 for the entire day. Celestial Park One of our team members recently went and used the family-size lockers to hold her belongings. She had brought an extra change of clothes because she knew she wanted to ride Fyre Drill in Isle of Berk and did not want to stay soaked all day. It also poured rain that day so having an extra change of clothes that she didn’t have to lug around with her all day was a big help! Celestial Park This area is very convenient because there is a bathroom located right next to the lockers. This bathroom can be utilized to change outfits easily. You can see on the map below where these lockers are located, circled in green. ©EpicUniverse If you are planning to change outfits between each land at Epic Universe, a locker could be a great idea. You might want to wear your Toothless shirt to Isle of Berk, but change into something different for Dark Universe. If you want to match the theme of each land, these lockers can hold your outfits! For the cost of $20, we think this is a good deal. Isle of Berk For more on Epic Universe, be sure to follow us at DFB! You can’t hear the rumble of roller coasters in downtown Orlando, but thrill rides have a new presence there. Vekoma Rides, a manufacturing giant based in the Netherlands, has opened a North American office in the downtown business district. “This is the place to be in terms of theme parks, even though we work all over the U.S.,” said Ricardo Etges, vice president for sales and marketing for the Americas. Etges was Vekoma’s first Orlando-based employee. Now there are eight people working out of its office near the intersection of Orange Avenue and South Street, including research and development engineers. “We basically have an extension of our engineering department in the Netherlands,” Etges said. “In the Netherlands, we have between 250 and 300 people, and we found out that we can expand our engineering capacity with local resources in Orlando.” The company, founded in 1926, originally made farm equipment and later steel products for the coal-mining and petrochemical industries. It started shifting to amusement park rides in the 1970s and in 2019 decided to focus more on North American markets. In March, Vekoma opened the Flash: Vertical Velocity at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. It’s the first “super boomerang” style coaster in the western world, Etges said. Coming up is Siren’s Curse, a tilt coaster under construction at Cedar Point in Ohio. It’s “a traditional lift-hill coaster with the seesaw element on top,” Etges said. “The train parks in the horizontal position, and there is a track section that goes from horizontal to vertical, like a seesaw. And then once it locks on the vertical position, it releases a train.” Among its Florida coasters are Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as well as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Tron / Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom plus Epcot’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, which debuted in 2022. It has also produced rides for Universal Orlando and Legoland Florida. The move into Orlando was designed to help expand the business in Central Florida and to become “more proactive and present to our clients,” Etges said. “A roller coaster is almost like you have a long-term relationship with the park,” he said. “Because the roller coaster is not only about installing the ride and making sure that the ride is up and running, but also keeping the ride up and running and reliable for decades.” Other plusses for a Central Florida office include proximity to parks (“We actually had a field trip to Epic [Universe]”), vendors, potential employees and November’s IAAPA Expo at Orange County Convention Center, Etges said. “We usually have 15 to 20 people from our team coming from the Netherlands, and we have a lot of meetings with clients,” at the Expo, he said. “We usually have at least one vehicle being showcased” on the convention center floor, which is produced by Orlando-based International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, he said. There are other projects in the works, but they remain hush-hush. “We always need to wait until the park announces the ride to be able to start to talk about it,” Etges said. “But at IAAPA this year, we’re going to have some surprises.” Email me at dbevil@orlandosentinel.com. After a few trips to Epic Universe, the new Universal Orlando theme park, a list of should-have-packed items emerged. Some of these goods are attraction staples or everyday “life in Florida” materials. Some are just good planning strategies. Some are more necessary at Epic than at other locations. Although these are recommended for most Orlando outings, here’s why they should be considered Epic essentials. Skin game Wear sunscreen, Momma always said, and Momma knows best. Make it a high-number SPF, too. Epic’s debut comes on the dawn of what will likely be another blazing Florida summer. The new theme park, which officially opens May 22, is not what you’d call shady at this point. That’s most apparent in Celestial Park, which leads to the four other lands and is the required route when walking from world to world. No trams, monorails or Hogwarts Express will save you. When the sun is at its highest, Epic visitors stand inside buildings, in nooks, in crannies, in that sliver of shade next to buildings for relief. Going without sunscreen practically guarantees sunburn. And be aware when reapplications are needed. Other hot-weather recommendations: sunglasses, cooling towels, collapsible water bottles for hydration. The park has multiple vertical water stations that make refilling easy. Power moves There are reasons to believe that smartphone use will go up at Epic, so a portable charger may boost confidence in the idea of continuous power. The official Universal Orlando app not only reveals wait times for rides and schedules for shows and meet-and-greets but a healthy chunk of Epic food ordering (and payment) is done there, too. The virtual line, used during previews for the Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry ride, also is run through the app. Word on the street has been that some users found success with the electronic queue by attempting to secure slots at times in addition to the ones posted by the park. Your results may vary, but that method sure can drain a battery. Heat is no friend of phone batteries either. A nice recharging near a shady plug could be a welcome break. Some Epic Universe visitors may prioritize browsing through Paris and sipping a butterbeer at Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel)Making a list Epic Universe will be a new experience for most people, and folks may not be able to complete all their missions in a single day. So a priority list should be, well, a priority. It can be old-school paper or digital on that phone. The park has 11 rides (including four roller coasters) and two stage shows that are scheduled for multiple performances a day. There also are new restaurants to consider. Scoping Epic online then clumping the Day One must-dos land by land cuts down on walk time crisscrossing Celestial Park. Everyone has different needs. Maybe save the potentially wettest ride (Fyre Drill in How to Train Your Dragon) for on your way out? Maybe Dark Universe is best after sunset? Maybe your group needs a chunk of quality time in the 1920s Parisian setting of Wizarding World of Harry Potter or the tempting inside queue of Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry? Dragon Racer’s Rally is one Epic Universe ride that requires sturdy shoes. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel)Sensible shoes Choose footwear wisely. As at many theme parks, there’s walking to be done. A couple of rides – Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment and Dragon Racer’s Rally — put passengers into dangling-legs positions, so shoes that could fall off are not allowed. We’re looking at you and your flip-flops and Crocs. There are also plenty of stairs (CoughNintendoCough) to conquer, so support is key. There have also been some slippery-when-wet reports, but … welcome to Florida. Power-Up Bands unlock gameplay within Super Nintendo World at Epic Universe. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel)Getting into the game Gamers should be aware that to take full advantage of the interactivity offered in Super Nintendo World, an investment in a Power-Up Band is needed. The wristbands are sold inside Epic for $42, and they activate games and effects attached to that world’s trademark ? Blocks. Complete enough challenges and become eligible for the Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown. On the other hand, Power-Up Bands are not required to wander around Super Nintendo World or ride its attractions. Back to backpacks OK, perhaps this one is counterintuitive after reeling off a list of essentials. But small backpacks are great for the little attraction lockers and for your aching back. Maybe throw in a couple of other goodies like a power bar or a small umbrella. Floridians should embrace the power of the parasol more. New and notes • The Universal Studios Store expansion at Universal CityWalk has opened, featuring more Nintendo and Harry Potter floor space. But even newsier news: It has butterbeer for sale. The beverage is now available outside of the theme parks’ Wizarding World attractions. More info: universalorlando.com • Walt Disney World has revealed the name of the pirate-themed lounge coming to Magic Kingdom. It will be known as the Beak and Barrel. (WDW has not revealed an opening date, though). More info: disneyparksblog.com • Gatorland’s Gatorpalooza is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. On tap: Music, games, craft vendors, specialty food, appearances by the Gatorland Vlog Team and more. On Saturday, the park holds its fifth annual Gatorland Florida Man Challenge. It’s all included with regular park admission. More info: gatorland.com • Legoland Florida has added another day to its worldwide Lego Festival. Park guests can now also participate on May 26 (aka Memorial Day). The event with group builds, meet-and-greets, dance parks, Fortnite-based experiences and more is set for Saturdays and Sundays through June 8. The festival is included with regular Legoland admission. It’s time to get SPOOKY. Halloween in Magic Kingdom Okay, okay, it’s actually NOT, but we’re already thinking ahead to the Halloween season in Disney World now that we’ve got some dates AND details about this year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. Now this year’s party will see a lot of returning entertainment, character meet and greets, and activities. BUT some new additions have been added to the party this year, so let’s dive into those NEW things. It’s likely this NEW version of Jack will bring even longer lines for the Jack and Sally meet and greet at the party, but we can’t wait to see his new look in person. Zombies Dance Party For fans of the Zombies movies, you’ll be able to dance the night away with the music from Zombies 4, as well as other Zombies movies. Costumes from Zombies 4 Break out your best Zombies dance moves, y’all! Price increase and later dates So this year has also brought something we’re NOT super thrilled about. Prices for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party depend on the date, but now the price for the most in-demand dates has gone up. Last year’s price for party tickets ranged from $119 to $199. This year’s price, though, ranges from $119 to $229, meaning those high-demand dates now cost $30 more! Ouch. 2024 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party welcome sign We also noticed that this year’s parties are starting a little later. They usually start the second weekend of August, but this year’s parties start on the third weekend of August. However, there are still the same number of parties as there were last year. CONFIRMED: PRICE INCREASE Hits Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in Disney World Mickey and Minnie Now, at previous parties, you could meet Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween outfits, but they usually met separately. Well, this year, for the first time EVER, Mickey and Minnie will be meeting party guests together in their Halloween outfits at Tony’s Town Square Theater. Mickey at his very own 2024 Not-So-Scary Halloween Party This is generally where Mickey meets guests during the day, but if you want to meet the STARS of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, you’ll want to make sure to make time to stop by when the party starts. Possibly a new place to drink and eat? We’ve added this as a bonus, even though it is not officially confirmed just yet. This year’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party could see a brand new place opened in Magic Kingdom with food and drinks. Yep, that Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge, The Beak and Barrel, may very well be open during the party. Okay, so we don’t know this for sure, and Disney has only said The Beak and Barrel will be open in late 2025, but it COULD happen. Here’s the thing, though: originally, The Beak and Barrel website had information detailing it would be open during the party…but Disney later took that info. down. Make of that what you will. ©Disney So, what does this mean if it is actually open this fall? Well, considering it’s probably going to be hard to get into that lounge on a regular park day, a lot of folks may be using the party to get access to the lounge, meaning it could be hard to get into during the limited ticket event, too. So this year’s party is looking to be EVEN better. If you’re interested, tickets go on sale for select Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests on May 15th and to the general public on May 22nd. Tickets are limited, and many dates sell out quickly! Stay tuned to DFB for more. It’s almost summer, so we are beating the heat (and the rain) the best way we know how — with soft serve! Disney Springs We got caught in a rainstorm and thought nothing would make us happier than a bit of ice cream while we waited it out. We slid over to Swirls on the Water at Disney Springs to try a new cone offering, which you’ll want to add to your snack list. Swirls on the Water is in the Marketplace at Disney Springs and offers soft-serve and Dole Whip. That’s right, you can get the Dole Whip you love without needing a park ticket. Swirls on the Water We tried the Salted Blue Corn Cone for $6.49. We had our choice of vanilla, strawberry, pineapple, lime, coconut, and mango, and went with the lime and mango swirled together. Keep in mind that because of the machines, there are only certain flavors that can be swirled together. Salted Blue Corn Cone When we took a bite (a lick?), the flavors reminded us of sherbet! Neither flavor was too strong, but the mango brought sweetness, and the lime brought tartness, but not enough for your face to scrunch up. We loved the balance between the two flavors. There were even sprinkles on the edges stuck on the cone with chocolate, and we loved the crunch! Lime and Mango What about that corn cone? It tasted like a traditional cone, but it was a gorgeous, vibrant blue with a stronger savory flavor. It isn’t overwhelmingly corn, which is a nice thing when it comes to ice cream, but it has the same level of corn as tortillas or popcorn. While it was more savory than normal, it doesn’t hit you over the head with heartiness, but plays a little bit of sweet and savory together. The cone! It felt adventurous to eat a savory cone, but the flavors were still familiar enough for the whole family to enjoy. It was a lovely twist on normal soft-serve but still hits that ice cream sweet spot. While it’s called Salted Blue Corn Cone, it wasn’t very salty and matched the ice cream well. Summer is around the corner and we’re so excited to be trying all the summer snacks at Disney World. Keep following Disney Food Blog for more snack and restaurant reviews.
