In a world where money is tight and every dollar counts, do you really need Lightning Lane at EPCOT on your next trip?

Lightning Lane

When planning a Disney World vacation in 2027, there are several things to consider: When to go, where to stay, which discounts to take advantage of, and what Lightning Lane strategy to use! Each of Disney World’s theme parks requires a different strategy, including EPCOT. While Disney World’s second gate is a favorite of many Disney adults (GUILTY!), the park isn’t bursting at the seams with rides, meaning guests can be a bit more selective in how they deploy Lightning Lanes. However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to plan, as the park’s most popular attractions fill up FAST!

Before we get started, a quick rundown on Disney’s current Lightning Lane offerings:

  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows guests to plan ahead of their visit and choose up to 3 Multi Pass experiences (one Tier 1, and a pair of Tier 2s or a trio of the latter) and arrival windows in a theme park (7 days in advance of their stay for Disney hotel guests and 3 days in advance for non-hotel guests).
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass allows guests to “Save time in line with a Lightning Lane Single Pass for one of our most in-demand attractions—those not available with Lightning Lane Multi Pass.” Single Passes are eligible to be purchased at the same time as their Multi Pass equivalents.
  • Lightning Lane Premier Pass “allows one-time entry to each Lightning Lane experience in a theme park — to enjoy at your leisure that day.”

EPCOT’s current Lightning Lane offerings are as follows:

Which Rides to Book?

Grab Guardians FAST

If you’re planning on purchasing a Lightning Lane Single Pass for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind — which you probably should, considering the ride generally averages the longest lines in any Disney World park from rope drop — you’re going to want to do it fast. Single Passes for the ride, which average around $23 per person, tend to sell out fast. So take advantage of that aforementioned 7- or 3-day window as early as possible.

Multi Pass Choices

Let’s move on to choosing your initial Multi Pass attraction. When deciding on which of the three Tier 1 options to choose, there are potential pros for each attraction:

  • Frozen Ever After is likely the best option for families with young kids, as the ride’s waits generally remain strong until late-night hours, when most tykes are tuckered out.

  • Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is certainly “worth” a Tier 1 Lightning Lane UNLESS guests are rope dropping the park via the International Gateway/Skyliner entrance.

Moving on to your Tier 2 Lightning Lanes, the choices are a bit more open-ended as (arguably unsurprisingly) none of the second tier attractions approach the waits of the park’s 4 big attractions. The closest — and easily our recommendation for your First Tier 2 Lightning Lane — is Soarin’ Across America. This latest Soarin’ overlay, which is supposed to be temporary though there’s no end date announced, has proven to be popular enough to make a Lightning Lane worth using.

For your second Tier 2 Lightning Lane, we’d recommend either Mission: Space or Living With the Land, depending on your thrill tolerance.

What’s a Burner Lightning Lane?

Once you tap into your very first Lightning Lane of the day, the tier rules disappear entirely. That means you can potentially hold three Tier 1 selections at the same time if you play it right.

The move is to pre-book one of your three selections on a ride you can hop on first thing in the morning, use it right when you walk in, and let that tap-in unlock the full menu for the rest of the day. And honestly, you don’t have to settle for a ride you’re indifferent about. For you, maybe that’s Spaceship Earth or Soarin’ — two rides that are popular enough that it doesn’t feel like a throwaway, and it frees you up to stack more Tier 1 rides as the day goes on.

Since there are only a few Tier 1 attractions in EPCOT, they fill up fast, so the burner Lightning Lane is almost essential here to get several top-tier rides (unless you play the refreshing game all day).

Day-Of Tips

Now, you’ve arrived at EPCOT with your Lightning Lanes, including a “burner” Lightning Lane ready to go. What other tips can you use to make the most of it? Here are a few of our favorites:

  • A Longer Window: While your reservation will show as “expired” in the My Disney Experience app after that one-hour window, you actually have up to THREE HOURS to redeem it. That’s right – three full hours, which leads us to Stacking.
  • Stacking:  Once the first hour of your current Lightning Lane window passes, the app treats it as used for the purposes of booking your next one. That means you don’t have to actually tap in before grabbing your next selection. Meaning you can be holding two selections at once without doing anything sketchy.
  • Keep Checking: Not seeing the Lightning Lane options you were hoping for? This is where our next tip comes in: Refresh the Lightning Lane page on the Disney World app throughout the day.  You can use this method after you have made all of your initial selections and confirmed your purchase. This tip can help you find better times for attractions that you have already booked. From the main screen, tap on the selection you are looking to modify the time for and then select “Modify Plan” in the pop-up. You will then be taken to a screen where you can modify the experience by either picking a new time or picking a new experience. On this page, select whatever time the app gives you to modify the selection to (even if it is much later). Then, you will be taken to a screen to review the details of your selection. On this page, find the attraction again, and you will see a “Modify Time” option in blue text. Click on this to see a list of available times. If you’re still not seeing an ideal time, you can repeatedly click “Close” and then “Modify Time” again to refresh the available times. Your selections are only saved for five minutes, but you can continue to refresh the available times, and if the five minutes run out, you can simply back out and come back in.
