The show “Remember: A Disney and Pixar Stage Show” follows WALL-E and Eve on a beautiful journey as they travel through different Disney stories. The machine WALL-E sits and travels on through the show, is the first-ever fully autonomous piece of equipment used in a Disney stage show. Imagineers are giving us a behind-the-scenes look at how this all works.

Planning guide for the ultimate Disney vacation

In a recent video on the Walt Disney Imagineering YouTube channel, they revealed all the behind-the-scenes details on how the “Mobilator” works. This is the first fully autonomous computer-driven character seen on stage. Meaning that it moves on its own across the stage without any human control. The Mobilator is the driving force behind the WALL-E Wagon and how this character is truly brought to life on stage. It is an extremely complex piece of machinery that has never been used before.

Now, this system is very complicated, and to ensure the success of the show and the safety of the performers, there are three ways in which the crew can know exactly where and how the Mobilator is moving on the stage.

First is the Lidar, which is located on one of the bottom corners of the Mobilator. It is constantly emitting signals which then hit reflectors across the stage. When the signal hits those reflectors, the position of the Mobilator is then triangulated on the stage.

Second is the Wheel Odometry, which counts how many times the wheel rotates to show where the system is on the stage.

And third is a Downward Facing Camera, which looks for different QR Codes that are embedded into the stage itself, so when the Mobilator needs to be in specific spots, for lifts or other specific moments, the camera will read these codes and know the system is in the right spot.

There is also a whole battery bank that sits inside the Mobilator to ensure that it can move and work properly throughout the entire show; these batteries equal about eight normal car batteries!
